The PP looks set to take an absolute majority in the general election according to the results of a Sigma Dos opinion poll published in El Mundo earlier today.
The poll showed the PP opposition taking a lead of 14.8% - enough to secure 191 out of the total 350 seats in the lower chamber and avoid the need to forge alliances with other parties.
A similar poll published in El Pais showed the conservatives enjoying a 15% lead over the Socialist PSOE party.
The PSOE electoral candidate, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, saw a growth in popularity last week amid the declaration of an ETA ceasefire, however, this did not carry across to his party.
For their part the opposition have yet to state their election manifesto, although it is expected to include cuts to public spending.
However voters seem so intent on punishing the Socialists afer four years of rising unemployment, recent cuts to public spending and austerity measures that they are prepared to take a chance with the Conservatives.
