Italy's Carige bank has expressed interest in buying 20 branches of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, a source close to the deal said on Friday.
Monte Paschi has to sell 150 branches by mid-December under an antitrust directive.
The source said Barclays has expressed interest in buying some 135 branches and Intesa Sanpaolo wanted about 50 branches.
MPS has already sold 15 branches to a small regional bank in southern Italy at 5 million euros each.
MPS General Manager Antonio Vigni said earlier on Friday that he was hopeful that the branch sale operation would respect the competition watchdog's timetable.
