El Hierro : 31 Quakes overnight

Tue 1st Nov 2011

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has announced how a total of 31 earthquakes were recorded on the island of El Hierro over the last 12 hours, ranging between 1.5 and 3.9 degrees on the Richter scale. Most of the activity were located to the North-west of the town of Frontera (the opposite side of the Island to the volcanic eruption) and at depth varying between 15 - 24km.

The Professor of Marine Biology at the University of La Laguna, Alberto Brito, who has been part of the team onboard the Ramon Margalef research vessel from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), has maintained that the area around the las Calmas bay should remain a 'no fishing zone'.

Brito will submit a report to the Marine reserve committe, who will meet on the island next week to analyze the consequences of underwater volcanic eruption.

Whilst the high occurence of sulphates in the water has led to a lack of oxygen, and caused fish to die, Brito considers that much of the marine plant life, together with limpets, winkles and crabs are in good condition.

Brito also said how the recovery of the sealife around the island depends on whether the volcano is still emitting sulphurous substances, or whether there is a further eruption.

The Youtube clip shows a detailed graphical analysis of the location, depth and magnitude of recent seismic activity - take note of the green dot located off the north coast of the island >>>
