The largest seismic activity recorded in the recent earthquake swarm shook the Island of El Hierro this afternoon.
The National Geographic Institute recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale at 18.10 hours, to the northwest of Frontera, where the majority of recent earthquakes have been located.
Earlier this morning the same location felt a quake of 4.0 on the richter scale at a depth of 20km.By 20.00 hrs CET the Island had recorded a total of 80 earthquakes for Wednesday alone.
Earlier today the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk in the Islands (PEVOLCA) requested that the Emergency Military Unit (UME) , was deployed to the island in the event of emergency evacuations being required.
The UME are able to provide temporary modular tents, kitchens, showers and other materials required to serve the population in the event that the regional government calls an evacuation from Frontera or the El Golfo areas.
A Youtube clip posted earlier today shows recent activity up to the period just before the latest quake hit >>>
