19 Earthquakes on El Hierro today so far

Thu 3rd Nov 2011

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) on the Island of El Hierro has reported an increase in the frequency of volcanic tremors over recent days, which is widely believed to indicate a likely change in activity below the Island.

However, even after yesterday evening's earthquake of 4.4 on the richter scale, the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk in the Islands (PEVOLCA) have refused to confirm that a further eruption may be imminent. Many observers and Scientists with no official capacity on the Island disagree.

As far as Thursday is concerned, the IGN have recorded some 19 earthquakes (00.00 hrs - 10.00 hrs CET), with the strongest measuring 2.7 on the richter scale, and being located once more to the Northwest of Frontera and at depth of between 12 km and 22 km.

An interesting point of note is that both IGN and PEVOLCA have now started to refer to the activity as 'Harmonic Tremors', which - in layman's terms - means that the tremors are exclusively linked to volcanic activity and the underground movement of magma.

No new Youtube clips posted on the subject so far this morning, so we have chosen to show a clip of what many respected scientists believe `could' happen if the seismic activity extended to the neighbouring Island of la Palma, which inturn indicates why the issue is of so much interest to our friends over the pond. >>>
