El Hierro : Further Earthquakes, Tunnel and Roads Closed

Sat 5th Nov 2011

Following the increase in seismic activity on the Island of El Hierro last night, a further three earthquakes were felt on the Island earlier today around the El Golfo - Frontera area, once again at the Northern side of the Island. The magnitudes were measured at 3.0, 3.5 and 3.9 on the richter scaled respectively, and recorded at a depth of 21km.

Shortly after lunch time PEVOLCA announced their decision to once again close the Los Roquillos tunnel for further notice due to the increased risk of landslides and rock falls following yesterday evening's 4.4 Earthquake.

By mid afternoon PEVOLCA extended their precautionary measures and closed a number of open roads on the island for the same reason.

The National Geographical Institute (IGN) also announced that they expect that a new vent in the El Golfo bay area has either opened up, or is about to do so - on the opposite side of the Island to the vent off the coast of la Restinga. The current vent in the Las Calmas bay is still erupting and the stain emitting from the underwater volcano is growing.

The IGN have not disclosed the exact location of the anticipated new vent, but it is believed to be at a much shallower depth than the previous eruption.

This recent Youtube clip shows a number of interesting images of the stain arising from the volcanic eruption off the coast off La Restinga >>>
