Seismic and volcanic activity on El Hierro indicates that the eruption is about to enter it's next phase, indicated by the intensity and frequency of strong harmonic tremors.
The National Geographical Institute (IGN) scientists are monitoring the situation off the coast of la Restinga, and believe that if the current activity continues then a mixture of volcanic gases together with ash and steam will become more prevalent in the eruption rising from the open vents on the seabed, however, and increase in pressure will mean that the eruption will spew the mix into the air.
Observers of the eruption has noted how the height of the jacuzzi-like bubbling to the surface of the water above the vent has become higher over recent hours, and that there is a greater amount of ash particles in the air.Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the Island, a total of 18 earthquakes were recorded between the hours of 00.00hrs and 08.00hrs GMT this morning. The quakes measured up to 2.9 on the richter scale and were recorded at depths between 15-22 km, with more than half of them having an intensity above 2.0.
