Nobody is seemingly immune to the effects of Spain's recent austerity measures and cuts to public spending, with a lack of funding at the Ministry of Defence resulting in the new S 80A submarines being delayed by up to 2 years.
Initially scheduled to be handed over to the Spanish Navy in 2013, the first S 80A will now be delayed until 2015.
A further three submarines will follow at the rate of one per year, which will now mean that the contract will not be fulfilled until 2018.
The Spanish Military has suffered with the defence budget being reduced over the last three years, being reduced by 7 Million Euros in 2011 alone.
Although there has been no official statement from the Ministry of Defence, state owned ship builder, Navatia, have commented that the change to the schedule is specifically at the request of the client as opposed to operational delays. Work was previously delayed for a number of months on SPS Galerna (S 71) as Navantia waited for a guarantee of payment from the Ministry in order that they could complete their payments to subcontractors.
