The National Geographic Institute (IGN) observing recent seismic activity on El Hierro have reported 15 earthquakes on the Island beweem 18.00 hrs on Saturday and 09.00 hrs GMT this morning.
As with the vast majority of recent activity, the epicentres were located in and around the El Golfo bay, to the North-West of the town of Frontera on the Northern coast of the Island. Magnitudes were measured between 1.5 and 3.1 on the richter scale, and depths ranged from 23km to just 11km.
On the opposite, southern coast of the Island, the bubbling activity in the las Calmas bay, off the coast of La Restinga, has been reported to have changed in appearance. Over recent days the activity had decreased in intensity, however activity has now resumed, but has brought a change of colour and a change to the odour in the area around the eruption.Volcanologists believe that this could indicate the opening up iof a new vent, but this, together with the change of the chemistry of the gases being produced, need to be confirmed by the scientists aboard the Ramon Margleff Oceanic Research Vessel.
