El Hierro Volcano Update : 18th November

Fri 18th Nov 2011

Scientists from the National geographic Institute (IGN) observing seismic activity on the Island of El Hierro have recorded a total of 37 earthquakes in the last 24 hours ( 15.00hr Thurs - 15.00hr Fri GMT).

As with almost all previous seismic activity seen over previous days and weeks, the activity was centered around the El Golfo bay, off the coast of Frontera on the North of the Island. Magnitudes ranged between 1.5 to 2.9 on the richter scale, with depth varying from 15 to 22kms.

On the opposite, southern coast of the island, scientists are continuing to monitor the underwater volcanic eruption off the coast of La Restinga. The majority of the research is being collected and interpreted by the Ramon Margalef Oceanic Research Vessel and is being reported directed to PEVOLCA and theInstituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) .

Whilst the eruption and the jacuzzi appeared to decrease in intensity yesterday afternoon, as it has done previously, it has caused concern amongst observers that that this may indicate the collapse of a vent and that it may indicate a further increase in seismic activity.

Furthermore, the IGN also estimate that the vent is just 150mt below the surface of the la Calmas bay and that the Surtseyan eruption may be about to enter a new phase.
