Eight out of the 12 European regions that currently register the highest unemployment rates are in Spain, according to figures released by the European statistical agency Eurostat.
The numbers, which were compiled from data taken last year, show four of these jobless areas are overseas French departments. The Spanish regions and enclaves that make up the list in the order of the highest unemployment figures are the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Ceuta, Melilla, Murcia, Valencia, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha. However, the number one region on the European jobless list is Reunion Island, which has a 28.9% unemployment rate. The Canaries come a close second with 28.7%.
Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana are the other French possessions.
