Scientists from the National Geological Institute (IGN) observing seismic activity on the Canary Island of El Hierro have recorded just three earthquakes in the last 24 hours (14.00 Tuesday - 14.00 hrs Wednesday GMT).
As in previous days and weeks, the activity continued to be centered in and around the El Golfo bay area, off the coast of Frontera, a town on the northern coast of the Island.
Today´s tally of three earthquakes is a further decrease on the four activities recorded yesterday, which seems to indicate that the number of seismic activities is - at least for now - subsiding. However, whilst the number of such quakes is falling, the magnitudes and distance to the surface are, if anything, increasing.Today´s three events ranged from measuring between 1.9 to 2.6 on the richter scale and at depths of between 15 and 23 kms.
Meanwhile, the Sarmiento de Gamboa Oceanographic research vessel has begun it´s geophysical survey of the seabed, where it is expected to remain in the El Golfo bay area for the next few days.
Scientists have also confirmed that water samples analyzed from around the jacuzzi off the coast of La Restinga, to the south of the island, have fallen to a pH of 5.71, compared to the average level of seawater being between 7.5 and 8.4.
PEVOLCA have also recorded an increase in the production of CO2 in the atmosphere, which is the equivalent to 7 times the amount observed under normal conditions.
