The regional Ministers of Economy, Andreu Mas-Colell, and Planning & Sustainability, Lluís Recoder, have defended the decision taken by the Generaltat of Catalonia in their support of Spanair.
The troubled airline collapsed last month after years of financial support by the Generalitat, but had to cease trading when it was decided that it was no longer viable to continue with their funding. Spanair left debts of 474 Million Euros behind them and swallowed up millions in public money.
Recoder defended the government's position by saying how the region wished to 'decentralise' the basing of airlines at Madrid, and that t he airline would have been a success if a willing partner could have been found.
For his part, Mas-Colell explained the details of the Government's management of Spanair, and the extent of their involvement in finding a partner airline "We did an exhaustive search, but could not find a suitable partner". Only Qatar Airways and a Chinese investment company expressed an interest, which eventually came to nothing.
By January the 27th, just 6 weeks after injecting a sum of 25 Million euros, the Generalitat held that it would be irresponsible to provide further funding, without which the airline could not operate.
