Fuerteventura and Lanzarote have been named as being amongst the first destinations planned by new airline, Iberia Express, who are due to commence operations on March 25th.
Iberia Express has been created to compete with 'low-cost' carriers on short and medium haul flights, where the parent company, Iberia, has been losing market share over recent years.
Other domestic routes to and from Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante and Malaga have already been named, together with connections to the European cities of Berlin, Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
The establishment of routes between the Canary Islands and Madrid became a last-minute priority following the opportunity afforded the airline by the recent collapse of Spanair have become a priority after Spanair, which now leaves just Ryanair as the only other airline connecting the capital with the Canary Islands.
The new airline plans the addition of further routes, but these will be subject to the allocation of new aircraft.
