Bill Gates, the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of the Microsoft corporation, met with Mariano Rajoy in Madrid yesterday to discuss Spain's financial contribution to both his charitable foundation, and wider international aid.
Prior to the meeting Gates told the press how he was puzzled by the country's inability to solve it's own debt and unemployment problems, and that the cost of employment was simply too expensive. He offered the opinion that salaries should have fallen in line with the country's unemployment figures rising, as the demand for jobs increases.
After the meeting yesterday afternoon at La Moncloa Palace, a government statement said that the PM had assured Gates that Spain would keep up its commitment to development aid within its current financial constraints. However, a study released on Tuesday by the Seek Development consultancy revealed that official Spanish aid spending in 2012 will drop by some 900 million euros - around 20%.
