Domestic air passenger numbers fell in January

Source: INE - Mon 12th Mar 2012
Domestic air passenger numbers fell in January

The number of passengers taking domestic flights within the Spanish airport network fell by 7.6% in January, when compared to January of 2011.

The report, which analysed data across a number of Spanish public transport networks for the month of January, and was complied by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), also revealed how the numbers of passengers travelling within the country by coach increased by 4.8%, whilst the number of passengers travelling by train increased by 2.4%.

With regards to the railway network, the INE noted a significant increase of 10.6% of passengers travelling on middle-dstance journeys, whilst the number of passengers travelling on long-distance / High-Speed AVE train journeys increased by just 0.5%.

The number of passengers travelling on short-distance or commuter railway journeys was reported to have increased by 2.4%.

A total of 390.7 Million journeys were made by public transport in January of 2012, representing a growth of 1.8% on January of 2011.

Although the report by the National Institute of Statistics did not draw any conclusions as to the reasons which may have influenced the respective decrease in air passengers and increase in rail passengers, the number of strikes and cancelled routes by a number of airlines earlier this year is likely to have an impact.

Iberia pilots took strike action on 4 dates in January alone which resulted in the cancelation of over 2'000 flights - most of which were timed to cause maximum disruption as the country returned to work after the Christmas and Three Kings Holiday period.
