'Paramount have not come to sell licence to redneck village'

Thu 15th Mar 2012

Pedro Alberto Cruz, the Regional Minister for culture & tourism, addressed the regional assembly yesterday afternoon to defend the Paramount theme park project, and to brief the house on recent developments.

The PSOE and IUV opposition parties have both previously been critical of the park and it was expected that the problems faced by the park's promotors, Premursa, in purchasing the park last week would be brought under scrutiny.

The Minister was insistent, however, that any problems that had been faced would not prevent the first stone from being laid on "the 30th or 31st of May" with further major contracts being issued throughout the summer.

He reassured the assembly that 'Paramount haven't just come to the region to sell a licence to a redneck village'.

At one point in the meeting, an exasperated Jose Antonio Pujante (IU-Verdes) demanded that the Minister stopped wasting public money and resigned, with Cruz replying that he would gladly resign if Pujante would promise to do likewise.

Cruz went on to speak of the many benefits that would come with the opening of the park, from an increase in the regional GDP, providing much needed jobs to the region and ain increase in tourism, to the fact that many current owners could expect to see an increase in the value of their properties.
