The Spanish car manufacturing industry reported a 16.6% decrease in productivity during 2012 to 1,979,000 units, according to a report by ANFAC - the Spanish Association of Car Manufacturers.

The decrease came despite a 7.0% increase in production in December when compared with the same month in 2011, with 118,569 units being produced.

The production of family cars fell by 16.28% throughout 2012 to 1,539,000 cars, although December also saw a rise of 12.23% with 92,255 cars rolling off the production line.

December was also a good month for exports, which increased by 9.41% to 105,912 units. However, 2012 as a whole saw a fall of 18.48% in exports year-on-year.

Last week PM Mariano Rajoy agreed to extend the 'Plan PIVE' - a €150 million Government backed scheme which offers a subsidy of €2'000 to anybody exhanging a car over 10 years old for a new vehicle.
