Almost 5 tons of Colombian cocaine with a street value of €240 Million were seizedby Police in the Alicante Province, representing in the largest drugs haul in the country since 2001, the Civil Guard commented yesterday.
The shipment was intercepted earlier this week in Elche, and prevented around 82 Million 'wraps' of the drug being distrubuted throughout the rest of Europe.
The gang used a leather factory in the town to hide their haul before distribution, and had imported the drugs from Colombia hidden in a shipment of leather hides. The Town has long been associated with the shoe manufacturing industry and shipments of leather are relatively common.
The Guardia were acting on information following the confiscation of a much smaller amount of drugs last month, and raided the premises to find 3'732 One-Kilo packages, and arrested 3 Spanish men at the scene.
