A European wide survey carried out on behalf of AXA Insurance has found that over 75% of Spaniards would approve of new legislation to reduce the current drink driving limit to zero The limit in Spain currently stands at 0.25mg, however three quarters of those questioned believe that should be brought down to 0. Those from the remaining European countries taking pat in the survey averaged 68% with the same opinion.
The same survey by AXA also revealed that 17% of Spaniards get behind the wheel of a car knowing that they could be over the limit. The Spanish DGT Central Traffic Authority last year reported that in over 40% of fatalities on the roads, there was a presence of either alcohol or drugs.
A Number of countries have already brought in a policy of zero tolerance legislation for drink driving, and many are expected to follow suit in the coming years.
The results, which are to be revealed in AXA's annual survey of driver behaviour reports that 9 out of 10 drivers taking part in the survey believed that road safety should be taught in schools in order to help reduce the number of accidents on the road. A similar number agreed that using a mobile phone whilst driving could contribute to accidents.
60% of those questioned in Spain believe their fellow countrymen are good drivers, but believed the Germans to be the best of all drivers in Europe. The Spanish as a Nation of drivers were placed 7th in the same league table of best European drivers.
