The National Spanish Court is holding is due to meet to discuss the extradition of the former HSBC Bank worker who stands accused of stealing confidential information of the names of thousands of secret account holders.
Herve Falciani, a French-Italian citizen, allegedly stole the list of around 24,000 clients of the Swiss division of the multi-national banking group in a bid to expose their tax-avoidance to their home countries.
He initially passed the data to the Ministry of Finance in France, where the Minister in Charge - Christine Lagarde, who is now the Head of the IMF - chose to share the information with many other world leaders to help them recover unpaid taxes through hidden wealth.
Falciani was arrested by the Spanish authorities and imprisoned between July and December 2012 before being released. Many protest groups in Spain, such as los Indignados, view Falciani and his actions as heroic given the economic state of the country.
