Scotlands largest Airline, Flyglobespan, yesterday went into receivership leaving a reported 5'000 travellers and holidaymakers stranded abroad – many of which are in Spain.
The Civil Aviation Authority will be assist about 1,100 of these travellers who purchased a Globespan package holiday, and therefore have some protection, however a further 3,400 are currently outside the UK and without the same protection as they booked their flight direct and on-line. Refunds on such flights will not be available but the Department of Transport in the UK advises that they may be able to receive a reduced rate repatriation fee in order to return home. Budget Airlines Ryanair and Easyjet have both offered specially discounted rates to help any of the victims return home.
An estimated 90'000 will also lose the Christmas Holidays that they booked with the airline – many of them intending to come to Spain – which will doubtlessly have a knock on effect on the Tourism Industry in Spain at this time of the year.
A helpline number has been issued for those travellers stuck in Europe needing assistance in returning home - +44 141 332 3233
