Spanish Congress yesterday decided not to change the current motoring laws concerning the use of hands-free mobile phone use in vehicles. Manual use of a mobile, or any system which has cables (IE not a Blue Tooth or Handsfree system) carries a 150 € fine and a deduction of three points of the driving licence in Spain.
The motion yesterday was to decide whether to pardon those who have been fined if they install a Bluetooth hands-free system within a month, but the proposal was rejected by some of the opposition parties, despite initially gaining some support from all sides.
The PP said that a greater level of education was required for motorists, and the Socialists claimed that research was required on the safety of such hands-free systems. It was also rumoured that the Bluetooth Device Company – Parrot – was behind the motion to change the law to protect it's sale of more the three quarters of a million units per year.
