USCA - The Air Traffic Controllers Union, of which 95% of the 2,400 controllers who work in Spain are members, have reported that the reason for the delays on flights to the Canaries over recent days is due to the ‘insufficient number of controllers programmed to work by AENA - the Spanish Airports Authority'.
The union members have denied that they have been working to rule, just putting the safety of passengers first, but say that they expect similar delays during the coming days in other parts of the country, including Madrid.
The controllers claim that there are 20-30% fewer controllers working on the Canaries than at this time last year, however the number of flights scheduled remains the same.
The Minister for Development has spoken out against the Air Traffic Controllers plans to strike, calling them ‘privileged' and claiming that they are already paid more than double the EU average for their profession.
