On Monday the Spanish Secretary of State, Miguel Angel Moratinos, ratified the position of the Government – of favouring the European Union (EU) to remove their stance against Cuba.
During an informative breakfast organized by the European Press Agency, Moratinos said that it is time to modify this policy of unilateral character, approved in 1996 by the previous conservative Government of Jose Maria Aznar.
He also stated that President Zapatero's administration will work in the EU to leave the Common Position, considered by analysts as interference and conditioned by US interests.
He also talked about the demands of diplomatic logic in a multilateral world that allowed the imposition of some patterns in total opposition to the focus of the communal block in relation with the Caribbean Island. About the bilateral ties, Madrid diplomacy Chief said Zapatero's administration will maintain its policy, based on the constructive and respectful dialogue with Cuban authorities.
Answering some questions of journalists, Moratinos said that Cuba for them is not the big priority in the actual Spanish semestral administration of the Union, which will conclude next June 30.
Moratinos also defended the necessity for Spanish presence in Cuba and insisted for a constructive dialogue with Cuban authorities.
