A spokesman for Spanish Airline Air Nostrum - which operates under the auspices of Iberia - spoke to la Verdad newspaper yesterday to confirm suggestions made last week that they would move activities to Corvera Airport as soon as the facility was operational.
The only airline to date to make such a commitment, hopes to be in a position to establish flight to and from Corvera Airport around Easter 2015, and is currently conducting a study to consider which domestic routes would be profitable.
Both Aeromur - the concession holder of the airport - and the Ministry of Public works are believed to have made contact with a number of other low-cost International carriers with regards to changing operations from San Javier to Corvera, with a further 2 Airlines (as yet unnamed) being reported as having expressed an interest.
Murcia is currently in the unenviable position of having just one domestic route (to Madrid), and therefore competing with much larger and established rival Alicante-Elche, which has 8 such routes.
Air Nostrum has undertaken a number changes over recent years, with major restructuring due to new owners IAG taking control, and suspension of Government aid for maintaining links between Murcia and the capital.
San Javier Airport currently maintains links with 19 destinations - 18 of which are international - with links to Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca being lost some time ago. Furthermore, passengers are unable to take advantage of the only domestic route (to Madrid) in the same day, as the timings are such that the Plane returns to san Javier just half-an-hour after landing. In addition to this, the airline does not operate the flight on Sundays in August due to insufficient demand by business travelers.
Furthermore, today (Friday 5th September) the San Javier - Madrid flight has been scheduled to land in Alicante-Elche on return "for operational reasons".
Tumbit hopes that a diversion of passengers from Corvera to Alicante-Elche will not become commonplace.
