Lidl will today open a new store in Erandio, Pais Vasco, which will represent it's 528th store in Spain.
By comparison Lidl has 590 stores in the UK.
The German discount retail chain injected an additional €190 million into the country in 2014 – an increase of almost 20% on 2013 (€160 million). On top of this, it opened its 9th Spanish logistics plant (in Lorquí, Murcia), to mark it's 20th anniversary of operations in Spain.
Much of the €190 million invested into increasing Lidl's presence in Spain was designated for the modernisation of its pre-existing supermarkets, with particular emphasis on reducing carbon emissions, and pushing fresh produce to a greater extent.
