Retirement age in Spain proposed to be extended to 67

Fri 29th Jan 2010

Today's weekly cabinet meeting of the Spanish government, is expected to approve the measure to delay the official retirement age of workers by 2 years, which will take it up to 67. Once the Government takes these measures to deal with the state deficit it will then be debated in Congress.

This reform is being proposed to the cabinet by Elena Salgado - the Minister for Tax and Economy - and her opinions have been heard over those of Celestino Corbacho - the Minister for Employment and Immigration – who opposes the proposal.

The changes are expected to be introduced in 2013 in and take full effect in 2025.
