Spain’s La Liga football league has announced that the operators Vodafone and Orange have paid EUR 330 million for the rights to broadcast live games from the top-tier La Liga, second-tier Liga Adelante and the domestic cup competition Copa del Rey in bars and restaurants over the next three seasons.
The companies announced their intention to resell the public broadcasting rights they were awarded to any interested party at "economically reasonable" rates. The operators paid EUR 300 million for the rights, plus another EUR 30 million in variables.
Vodafone currently offers a football-based package targeted specifically at hotels, bars and cafeterias, including a mobile line with unlimited calls and 3 GB of data, broadband access at speeds of up to 120 Mbps plus pay-TV with over 80 channels, including the rights to broadcast live football games in public spaces for EUR 230 per month. Orange’s own public broadcasting package, launched last week, includes a mobile line with unlimited calls and 3 GB of data, plus pay-TV, including the rights to broadcast live football games in public spaces for EUR 171 per month (not including VAT) for 30 Mbps fibre broadband and EUR 181 for 300 Mbps broadband.
Mediapro and Telefonica were awarded the two main La Liga rights packages for EUR 1.90 billion and EUR 750 million respectively in what was the first UK-style collective auction for live TV rights held in Spain.
