A total of 342 flights in and out of Spain were cancelled on Thursday as European airspace was shut down due to the cloud of volcanic dust coming from an underwater volcano in Iceland.
161 departures and 181 arrivals were cancelled on Thursday, the majority of them on flights to the U.K. where all the airports are expected to be closed until at least 1am Saturday. Flights from to Spain to Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden have also been cancelled.
The Spanish Airports Authority AENA is recommending that passengers get in touch with their airline before setting out for the airport. The AENA information numbers is902 404 704.
Flights to and from Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante, Almería, Lanzarote, Torrejón, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Murcia-San Javier, Granada Jaén, Santander, Girona, Reus and Valencia have all been affected.
