The PM has announced he is taking a pay cut of 1,000 € a month, however, Zapatero will still take home around 6,500 Euros each month. The pay cut is mentioned in the Government's austerity plans which were published in the Official State Bulletin on Monday.
The cut of 15% corresponds with the figure being imposed on all top members of the Cabinet who have also had their salaries frozen since 2008.
Those holding a position below Secretaries of State d do get the 15 payments a year, as opposed to the 12 Payments for their more senior colleagues. This month's payment will be the last before the pay cuts are applied.
