Holidaymakers warned 'Don't miss out on holiday protection'

Fri 25th Jun 2010

Expatriates and travellers jetting off on holiday this summer are being warned to take adequate steps to ensure they are covered by insurance protection.

The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) has warned 'DIY' travellers who book flights and accommodation independently of a travel agent not to miss out on the protection afforded to packaged holidays.

An AITO spokesman said: "The temptation to create DIY holidays, by booking flights and accommodation separately, does not offer the protection, in case something goes wrong, given by a packaged holiday."

His comments follow research by MoneySavingExpert.com, which found that most insurers would refuse a payout to travellers whose plans were disrupted by the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud that grounded flights in May.

Just seven of the 20 major insurance companies sampled by the website said they would definitely consider a payout on their standard policies if travellers are yet to buy cover.

Expatriates and other holidaymakers who book a package holiday should expect a refund from their tour operator, not their insurer, if they are unable to go, the website noted.
