Expats : ' Being Sociable is more important for older people '

Source: Expatriate Healthcare - Fri 1st Oct 2010

Expats have been advised to keep regular contact with a group of friends in order to enjoy a good quality of life.

Caroline Moye, head of communications for age charity Independent Age, said it is important to engage in social activities as people grow older.

She also explained that meeting up with like-minded people is essential for older expatriates.

"Saying 'hello' to another person is part of a web of social contact that is vital for older people, particularly if they live alone."

Physical activity is also beneficial to health for expatriates of any age, as keeping fit helps to reduce the likelihood of having to make an overseas medical insurance claim.

Ms Moye's comments come after August's NatWest International Personal Banking Quality of Life report found almost three-quarters (71 per cent) of expatriate health insurance policyholders are happy with their retired lifestyle and believe they have made the right decision to relocate abroad.
