The Government of Catalunya is to debate the banning of wearing the burkha in the region's schools, but may still allow Muslim girls to wear a hijab if they should choose to do so.
The difference between the two headcoverings is that the burkha covers the whole of the head and face, except for the eyes – whilst the hijab is a more simple headscarfe that just covers the hair. The Regional government believes that this will enable pupils to continue to follow their religious beliefs, but without 'impeding intercommunication between students'.
Those in favour of the ban consider that the burkha makes vision and head movement difficult and can 'impede hand and arm movements', and that facial expressions and verbal communication are missed if they are hidden from view.
The Generalitat also promotes the wearing of hiyabs over and above burkhas as they allow schools and pupils alike to show cultural and religious differences in spanish society.
