The number of families booking holidays or flights to Spain and its islands increased once again last month, the latest statistics show.
A firm favourite in previous years, and emphasising the enduring appeal of Spain as a holiday destination, the latest government data reveals that over 5.2 million foreigners visited Spain during September alone.
Last month marks the fifth consecutive month of growth, with Brits and Germans accounting for over 50% of total visitors, despite the allure of cheaper destinations such as Turkey or Egypt, both outside the eurozone.
The latest statistics place Spain firmly on track to improve on the 52.5 million visitors recorded for the whole of last year, though 2009 as a whole was a difficult year for Spanish tourism as the global economic downturn encouraged many Europeans to holiday at home.
The impending smoking ban in public places has also caused the Spanish tourist industry certain to consider what it's effect will be on visitor numbers, some optimists even noting that it could lead to an increase in demand for flights to some Spanish locations popular with health-conscious travellers.
