Serious disruption at many of the UK's airports, and on the Eurotunnel, has left tens of thousands of travellers stranded across Europe as Christmas approaches. The backlog that has resulted in so many cancelations is making it an almost certainty that many travellers will not make it to their destination by Christmas day.
Airport officials at Heathrow had expected a further snowfall overnight, but given that this did not happen it allowed maintenance crews to attempt to clear the runways. Even so, more than half of the flights at Europe's busiest international hub were expected to be cancelled.
Travellers were told not to come to the airport unless they had already checked with their airline to confirm that their flight was operating.
The Prime Minister is even believed to have offered Military assistance in clearing the runways, but it is unclear whether this offer of help has been accepted.
The agency in charge of European airspace covering 38 countries, confirmed that a total of 22'000 flights had been cancelled on Monday, but expected far fewer to be cancelled today, Tuesday.
Eurotunnel also recommended that passengers cancel their trips if at all possible over the next few days - and receive a full refund - unless their trip was absolutely necessary. Whilst their trains are running, albeit at a reduced service due to conditions in both the UK and France, they have received a surge in demand for tickets due to thousands of travellers seeking alternative transport to the continent.
