The chief executive of Santander is expected to appeal against an imminent court judgement that could otherwise end his long career in finance, people familiar with the case told the Financial Times.

Portuguese bank Espirito Santo is in talks with Spain's Banco Pastor over a merger in the first half to create a group with combined assets of 113 billion euros, Expansion reported, citing sources close to the deal.
