Sales of Mopeds in Spain Falls

Wed 16th Feb 2011

Motorcycles and Scooters of all sizes have always been convenient for nipping around larger Towns and Cities in Spain, however, a significant fall in Sales was reported for the over 125cc category over the course of the last year.

The Spanish motorbike and scooter manufacturers association (ANESDOR) reported that last year the 50cc category was the only one to grow overall (+9.6%), in stark contrast to the fall in sales of road and off-road bikes. The figures for 2010 show a of 135,144 motorbikes of all categories being sold in Spain, compared to being 133,766 registered in 2009.

Despite these figures, last year continued with the trend seen in the two previous years, and ended with a 4.7% drop in the sales of scooters & motorbikes compared to 2009. Since the start of the recession in 2007 the sector has experienced a fall in sales of 57.2% overall.

The Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, who regulate the granting of subsidies for purchasing mopeds and motorcycles, also offer 'Moto-E grants' for scrapping old bikes, with the intention of helping to increase sales for new ones.

However, according to forecasts made by ANESDOR, the Moto-E scrapping subsidy had a very positive impact on sales in the first six months of the year, and that just 10% of all buyers of new vehicles took advantage of the subsidy.
