Further questions arose today over Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's political future, when the Socialist Party's executive committee announced that they would be a delay in launching its campaign for May's regional and local elections.
Party insiders said that they want to avoid the May 22 elections from turning into a public campaign against Zapatero and wish instead to keep the focus on regional politics.
The launch of the campaign was originally intended for April 3rd, but just last night party insiders got word of that the entire campaign was to be re-thought. The original campaign launch was planned three months ago, aside from Zapatero's decision to continue in national politics or not.
The deputy party secretary general, Jose Blanco, made light of the last minute cancellation, putting it down to "strategic reasons."
