The Regional government of Catalonia handed out fines to a total of 205 businesses throughout 2010 for their refusal to display signs in the regional language.
The Secretary General of the PP opposition party referred to the penalities as a 'democratic shame', and that they did not respect the rights of induviduals to speak whichever language they chose. He commented '"It is not normal that we have to constantly remind people that in Catalunya we have two official languages, and that the people of Catalunya have the right to express themselves both in Catalán and in Castilian Spanish,"
He also demanded that the regional government cease to fine businesses, which he estimated would reach almost 1 Million euros during its term of office.
In he city of Barcelona alone 98 penalties were awarded, reaching a total of over 82,000 euros.Be the first to comment on this Story !!
