The Spanish Data Agency (SDPA), has answered a concern regarding the application of the Data Protection Act in the case of call centre registers who may collect telephone numbers and full addresses of any callers.
The SDPA affirmed that, even if telephone numbers and addresses are widely available on publc listings, if the information available to the data handler permits the direct identification of the individual, or if identification is possible without any disproportionate effort, then the information should be regarded as 'personal data' and therefore falls under the scope of the Data Protection Act.
