Telefonica pioneer use of mobile phones as security passes and debit cards

Tue 5th Apr 2011

Spanish Telecomms giant, Telefonica, has introduced a new contactless mobile payment project for employees.

The pioneering technology has been developed called ‘Distrito NFC' and will be used by over 1'000 staff at the network's headquarters in Madrid.

The Employees have all been given Samsung NFC devices that will enable them to use their mobile phones for the payment of products in the shops and outlets on-site. They can also use the same device to pass through the many security turnstiles in the building. As the scheme is extended, a further 10,000 employees are expected to be handed such devices.

Guillermo Ansaldo, Chairman and CEO of Telefónica Spain, said "By launching this initiative and other similar projects which we will deploy in other countries where we operate, Telefónica aims to prepare for deployment in Spain and lead the way in NFC development. It is estimated that the number of mobile NFC enabled mobile handsets will reach 260 million in 20141 while the value of the transactions made will surpass 80 billion euros worldwide"."
