The Spanish Tax Agency's new system for on-line annual declarations crashed on its first day in operation yesterday, as taxpayers anxious to claim their rebates flooded the website.
Under the new arrangement, taxpayers can now access a draft declaration prepared by the AETA by providing their tax identification number and a key reference number to their previous year's declaration. The agency then sends a text message with the reference number for this year's declaration, which can be accessed directly on the website.
Instead of the five minutes the agency promised it would take to complete the process, frustrated users yesterday lost several hours of their time. The AETA is expected to return 11.167 billion euros this year in excess taxes take from source.
