Works of Joan Miró open at Tate Modern today

Wed 13th Apr 2011

The works of Joan Miró, arguably one of Spain's / Catalonia's most talented artists will go on display in London this week.

Miró died at the age of 85 on christmas day 1983 and, unlike his contempories Picasso and Dali, his life was reasonably unremarkable - aside from his work.

A proud Catalan, Miró refused to flee from the Franco regime that gripped Spain following the civil war, and instead retreated to his studio and poured his anger and frustration into his work. One such piece, 'the hope of a condemned man', depicts his thoughts on the anticipated execution of a Catalan nationalist by Franco in 1974.

It will be the first time in over 50 years that his work has been seen in London, and the Tate modern art gallery is expecting an unprecedented interest in his work when the exhibition opens today.
