Ryanair intends to re-commence flights from Spain to Plovdiv in Bulgaria from the back end of 2011, despite the route being scrapped earlier in the year.
Tickets for the flights initially went on sale in December 2010 and saw a high demand, possibly due to the large expat community of Bulgarians living in Spain - currently standing at 300'000.
The reason behind the original cancelation was not due to demand, but the termination of the five-year contract between Ryaniar and Girona Airport. The new Catalonian government did not approve of the contract that Ryanair had with the contract and a hasty cancelation was announced at the end of 2010. As a result, Ryanair pulled all of it's flights from Girona Airport to 18 destinations, including Plovdiv, London, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Ibiza, Madrid, Oslo.
Ryanair currently serves Plovdiv Airport from Stansted Airport twice per week, largely for tourists to access the popular Bulgarian ski resorts.
Plovdiv became even more attractive as a destination to Ryanair last year, when its fees were sharply reduced and now stand three times lower that the fees at the airport in the capital Sofia. The low fees are expected to stand for a further 2 years.
