Protest camp may be cleared to protect shop owners rights

Thu 2th Jun 2011

The Spanish protestors were warned yesterday, that if their camps in Madrid's Puerta del Sol central square continues, that action will be taken by the authorities.

The encampment now sprawls across almost all of the square and is covered with blue tarpaulins by way of a makeshift shelter against the elements. Local shop owners argue that they have been patient, but that the camp now hinders access for deliveries and potential customers alike.

"It cannot be that some citizens cut off the rights of others," Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told Cadena Ser radio in an interview yesterday.

"When there are shopkeepers who complain that they are being deprived of their rights or they have difficult getting by, then you have to find an understanding," the Minister continued.

Rubalcaba spoke of police action being proportionate in order to avoid any unnecessary violence, as seen when clearing the Barcelona protest camps last Friday, "For the moment we will see how things develop and continue acting in a proportionate and, I think, intelligent manner."

Although the Camp in Barcelona's Plaza de Catalunya was cleared, with almost 150 injuries being noted, last Friday, the protestors returned to set up camp once more after a matter of hours.
