The European Commission yesterday increased the offer of 150 Million Euros of compensation that it made earlier in the week to help farmers and producers hit by the 'cucmber crisis', to 210 Million Euros.
The sum of 150 Million Euros was expected to cover 30% of farmers losses.
The EU commissioner for Agriculture, Dacian Ciolos, told the press that this increased amount should cover 50% of the losses suffered by the European horticulture sector because of the drop in sales of salad, fruit and vegetables.
Spain's Minister for Agriculture, Rosa Aguilar, insisted that compensation covering 30% of losses was totally insufficient and asked for it to be increased to 90 or 100%.
The PP opposition party has seized the opportunity to demand that the Government toughen up, and demand 2.5 Billion in compensation for the country's farmers.
