The ruling PSOE party are considering moving the date of the general elections forward to coincide with favourable economic data, traditionally see following the summer period.
Although a general election is required to be held by March, and was widely expected to be called by the governments at this time to allow as much time for campaigning and preparation, the PSOE have been widely tipped to lose.
Spain's El Pais and El Mundo newspapers are now reporting that Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero could be considering an early election given that unemployment usually improves over the summer months and that the government is expecting other financial data to show positive signs of an improvement in the struggling economy.
The Partido Popular (PP) opposition currently has an estimated 13% lead based in polls taken following their numerous victories in the recent local elections as voters punished the government for austerity measures imposed to reduce the country's debt.
Whilst the press speculate over the uncertainty over the date of the general election, one thing remains certain : The Prime Minister will not be standing for a third consecutive term.
