Spain has today approved a decree that only allows government spending when the finances permit. The deficit-control measure was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba during today's weekly meeting of the cabinet.
The Cabinet recommended that the autonomous regional governments follow suit, but is not able to force them to adopt this measure. Escalating public spending by many of Spain's regions has become a source of concern to central government as they try to reign in debt through a number of austerity measures.
Earlier this month El Pais reported how the Autonomous Region of Castille la Mancha was 'practically bankrupt' and how public spending in Catalonia was out of control, with the regions seemingly ignoring central governments plea for cuts in spending.
