Following an announcement that Public workers would be expected to work longer hours, or take fewer holidays for the same pay - and quite possibly less - on Friday the Catalan regional government said it would be be slashing it workforce of 16,000 by almost 10% - 1'475.
Over recent months any of the region's publically owned companies have endured staffing cuts, either through temporary contracts that have not been renewed or by encouraging early retirement of positions that have not been replaced. Since been voted into power in December of last year, the CiU administration has cut many positions is all sectors, which has lead to a number of protests and demonstrations across the City.
Public workers maintain that the regional government's policy of cutting its deficit this year by 10% by more cuts being made will lead staff shortages and the deterioration of basic services for citizens.
The first of the redundancies have already taken place at the Catalan public works authority, GISA, where Seventy people - amounting to or 30% of all staff, were laid off.
